Chennai: Madras high court granted bail to three income tax officers and two sub-inspectors, all accused of robbing a businessman of 20 lakh, on Monday, before police arrested them in connection with another case. They will therefore remain in jail. So far, seven people have been arrested by the Thousand Lights police for snatching 20 lakh from a trader who had brought the cash to the city to buy a scanning machine on Dec 16.

They included special sub-inspectors Sunny Lloyd and Raja Singh, and income tax officials Pradeep, 40, Damodharan, 38, and Prabhu, 41. Earlier in the day, Justice Sunder Mohan granted bail to the three I-T officers and sub-inspector Raja Singh. When the plea came up for hearing, complainant H Mohammad Ghouse opposed the applications to them saying the stolen money was to be deposited with the jurisdictional magistrate.

Though the police had recovered the money, it had not yet been deposited in the court, preventing the petitioner from claiming it, his counsel argued. He further contended that the accused should not be granted bail until the deposit was made. However, the court disagreed, stating that the failure to deposit the recovered money could not be a ground to oppose bail to them.

The court then directed the police to deposit the money with the magistrate and allowed the bail applications..
