The UK Government has announced that 90% of Blue Badge applications are now submitted online. However, the Department for Transport has said it is continuing to seek improvements and it is actively working to improve the digital service to streamline the application process for both applicants and local councils. Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood said that the improvements include "undertaking specific research and testing to identify innovative improvements to the online application process".
These details emerged in a written reply on Monday after Reform UK MP Lee Anderson queried about measures to "reduce processing times for applications to the Blue Badge digital service". The Blue Badge Digital Service operates as a national online platform for applications and badge management through GOV.UK.
Notably, in 2019, the eligibility for a Blue Badge was broadened to cover people with invisible disabilities such as Parkinson's, dementia, and epilepsy. This scheme aims to help give easier access to parking near destinations for those travelling either as drivers or passengers, reports the Daily Record . Blue Badge holders are being reminded that their permit is only valid for three years from the date of issuance and that renewal doesn't happen automatically.
To prevent any inconvenience, it's wise to apply for a new badge 12 weeks prior to the expiration of the current one, ensuring it arrives in time. For those who continue using an expired Blue Badge, there's a hefty £1,000 fine. It's worth noting that each Blue Badge renewal undergoes reassessment to confirm ongoing eligibility.
The government website states: "Your Blue Badge is not renewed automatically. You need to reapply for it every 3 years. "Your eligibility will be checked every time you reapply.
This is to make sure you can still get a Blue Badge. Your local council processes your application and decides if you can get a Blue Badge." Crucially, users should begin the reapplication process 12 weeks before their badge's expiry date.
To renew your Blue Badge online, you'll need: proof of identity (such as a birth certificate, passport or driving licence) proof of address (such as a Council Tax bill or government letter) proof of benefits (if you get any) You will also need to know: your National Insurance number (if you have one) the details of your current Blue Badge You should contact your local council if there's a change to your: name address council area contact details Costs for a Blue Badge differ throughout the UK, with prices up to £10 in England, £20 in Scotland and at no charge in Wales. Renewal submissions can be made via the GOV.UK website.
