Freezing rain warnings, flood risk pushing into Atlantic Canada

Freezing rain will make for slick roads and sidewalks across much of Atlantic Canada between Sunday night and Tuesday

After hitting Ontario as a major ice storm this weekend, a sprawling system pushing east will send a diverse mix of conditions spilling over the Atlantic provinces to begin the new workweek. Freezing rain warnings are in effect across New Brunswick and western Prince Edward Island for several hours of icing that could lead to slippery roads and sidewalks. Heavy rain will follow the wintry precipitation, posing a flood risk for portions of Nova Scotia.

We investigate Freezing rain a threat in the Maritimes through Monday morning Precipitation will push into cold air parked over the Maritimes on Sunday night, setting the stage for snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain throughout the region. The most widespread risk for freezing rain will cover New Brunswick and western Prince Edward Island, where 5-10 mm of ice accretion is possible through Monday morning. This includes Fredericton , Moncton , and Charlottetown .



Use extra caution while heading out Sunday night and Monday morning as exposed surfaces will be slick. A light glaze of ice is also possible throughout much of Nova Scotia before a quick changeover to plain old rain as southerly winds push warmer temperatures into the region. The wintry mix will arrive across western and central Newfoundland by Monday afternoon and evening, bringing snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain to the region before precipitation transitions to plain rain by early Tuesday.

Heavy rain arrives Tuesday A boundary sitting over the Maritimes will serve as the focus for heavy rain heading into Tuesday as ample moisture slides into the region from the south. Heavy rain is expected throughout the day across southern sections of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, including Halifax . Some areas could see 50+ mm of rain from this soaker before it tapers off later in the day Tuesday.
