Saturday’s football game between Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern was, at times, painful to watch. But after a slow, uninspired start by the two Big South/OVC rivals, the play improved and the game came down to the wire with an exciting finish. A potential game-tying field goal from 30 yards out by CSU’s Reid Montgomery was wide right with six seconds left in the game, sending Gardner-Webb to a 17-14 win.
Charleston Southern aims for strong finish to tough season CSU trailed 17-7 with under four minutes remaining in the game but put together their best drive of the game, an 11-play, 88-yarder with quarterback Kaleb Jackson scoring on a three-yard run with :26 seconds left to play. CSU’s Noah Jennings recovered the onside kick and returned it to the Bulldogs’ 40-yard line. A 20-yard scamper by Jackson put CSU in position to tie the game.
“We didn’t play well enough to win today,” CSU head coach Gabe Giardina said. “We can play better and I have to get us there. Our players are giving us everything they can give us.
We have to get over the hump.” The visiting Bulldogs won the inaugural North/South BBQ bowl trophy with the win, their third victory of the season. CSU dropped to 1-8 overall with their seventh straight loss.
The Bucs are 0-6 in Big South/OVC play. Gardner-Webb takes a 13-11 advantage in the rivalry, winning the last three meetings. The Bulldogs averaged just 2.5 yards per carry in the running game but Edward Saydee had 86 yards rushing.
Jackson, thanks to the final drive, finished with 128 passing yards but the CSU offense struggled all game. The Bucs finished with 222 total yards, more than 100 yards coming in the final five minutes. Gardner-Webb managed the only points in a sluggish first-half, with Jay Billingsley converting from 25 yards out after a great stand by the CSU defense.
CSU’s offense grinded out 62 yards in the first half. The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a touchdown in the first minute of play when Saydee got loose on a 44-yard scamper for a 10-0 lead. CSU’s offense showed signs of life, getting a one-yard touchdown run from Tyson Greenwade with 7:23 left in the third quarter.
Charleston Southern falls at Tennessee Tech But that would be about the only threat CSU would muster until the latter stages. The Bulldogs got a touchdown with 5:56 remaining in the contest as Ridell hit Taylor Shields on a 14-yard score. Jackson was intercepted on CSU’s next possession, allowing the Bulldogs to chew up most of the remaining clock.
