France’s interior minister announced on Tuesday that he has intensified measures to prevent the return of Omar bin Laden, son of the infamous al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, to the country. Omar had been residing in France’s Normandy region until October 2023, when French authorities revoked his residency papers and expelled him. The authorities simultaneously issued a two-year ban on his re-entry.
In a social media update posted on X, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau revealed that an additional ban has been imposed to ensure Omar bin Laden “will not be able to return to France for any reason whatsoever.” According to the French daily Le Parisien, Omar bin Laden has now taken up residence in Qatar. Omar bin Laden had been living in the Orne region of Normandy since 2016 with his British wife, where he pursued a career as an artist.
Recent reports indicate that he lost a legal challenge last week to rescind the ban on his return. Retailleau stated that Omar bin Laden was expelled due to social media posts that were judged to be sympathetic toward terrorism. Omar’s father, Osama bin Laden, infamously orchestrated the September 11, 2001 attacks and was subsequently killed by U.
S. Navy SEALs in a 2011 commando operation in Pakistan..
