Carde Smith had been committed to the USC Trojans since August. Before that, though, he was previously committed to the Auburn Tigers, and in 2024's NIL and transfer-happy college football environment, is it any surprise that he's decided to make another move? This time, it's a decommitment from USC. His pledge to the Trojans lasted less than four months as there's news that Deion Sanders and Colorado are now hard after his commitment.
BREAKING: Four-Star OT Carde Smith has Decommitted from USC, he tells me for @on3recruits The 6’6 290 OT from Mobile, AL had been Committed to the Trojans since August He becomes the Top Available OT in the ‘25 Class (per On3) https://t.co/5O85KKtJ4A pic.twitter.
com/7SgVWQiJiC This was from Chad Simmons of On3, who had this to say about the state of Smith's recruitment last week. “The chatter behind the scenes has been picking up for some time and Colorado looks to be close to flipping Carde Smith from USC,” Simmons wrote . “The one-time Auburn commit flipped to USC and now the Buffaloes look to be on the verge of flipping him from the Trojans.
Smith sees an opportunity to play right away in Boulder, and the way the program has performed on the field this season has caught his attention.” To that point, USC is 5-5 (3-5 B1G) while Colorado is 8-2 (6-1 Big 12), ranked No. 16 in the nation and in the chase for the 12-team College Football Playoffs.
The Buffaloes also have "Coach Prime" on their side, who is undoubtedly one of the top recruiters in college football. The word from Simmons was that a flip to Colorado was likely. Step one of that flip took place with the decommitment from USC.
We'll have to wait and see if Colorado gets a new 4-star offensive tackle commitment sooner rather than later. According to the 247Sports Composite, Smith is the No. 24-ranked offensive tackle in the country.
