Lafayette police arrested a Fountain County man Thursday after reportedly finding methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and bottles of synthetic urine in his truck. A Lafayette police officer pulled over a truck in Tippecanoe County about 11:45 p.m.

Thursday after it turned onto State Road 38 East from Kingsway Drive. The reason for the stop was the truck’s license plate light was out. The officer identified Christopher Newman, 41, as the driver, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor's Office.

After placing him under arrest, the officer searched Newman’s truck and reportedly found three baggies of white crystals inside a cigarette pack, a pipe with burnt black residue inside it and two bottles of gold liquid. The white crystals reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine after the officer performed a field test.

Newman reportedly told police the bottles contained synthetic urine and were “years old,” according to the affidavit. Officers determined Newman was on probation in Fountain County and was subject to random drug tests. The prosecutor's office has charged Newman with possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia and possession or sale of adulterant or synthetic urine.

He faces up to six and a half years in prison if he is convicted on all charges. As of Sunday, Newman was still in the Tippecanoe County Jail on a $2,500 cash bond, according to jail logs and the affidavit. Braun orders IEDC audit and calls for transparency at press conference.
