The Fort Dorchester Girls enter their week on the pitch with a little momentum and revenge on their minds. The Patriots claimed a 3-1 victory over Summerville April 4 at Bagwell Stadium. “This is a good win,” said Fort Dorchester coach Jason Birchwood.

“We were coming off Spring break and facing a rival. Our girls look forward to playing Summerville every year. We felt we had the opportunity to get that W so the girls wanted to make sure we did.

” It was the third straight win for Fort Dorchester, but the sweetest victory yet for the new month. “Tonight we believed in ourselves and that we could go out and play an aggressive style,” Birchwood said. “We got to the ball first, executed set pieces and made tackles.

Even our attacking players were more assertive in terms of going at defenders rather than being hesitant. We’ve focused on having the right mindset all week. You tend to get the look that you work for and that was evident tonight.

” The Patriots had goals from senior captain Madison Sapienza, freshman Olivia Bastarache and junior Brooke Walker. Fort Dorchester did fall 2-1 the next day to Gray Collegiate Academy to even their record at 7-7 with a 2-2 mark in region play. Bastarache had the sole Patriots’ goal.

Olivia Bastarache (#6) scored a goal for Fort Dorchester during both the Patriots’ match against Summerville and their match against Gray Collegiate Academy. “That game should help us get ready for a massive week coming up,” Birchwood said. “We are going into region games against Ashley Ridge and West Ashley and then have James Island the following week.

On any given day we can make it very difficult for any opponent and I’m looking forward to those contests from a tactical standpoint.” The Patriots’ two region losses came to Ashley Ridge and West Ashley so the rematches are vital to the final region standings. James Island is the only team in the region that Fort Dorchester hasn’t already faced this season.

“Right now James Island is undefeated in the region, but Fort Dorchester can have something to say about whether they remain undefeated or not,” Birchwood said. “I am quite confident in the group we have. I know the James Island players and so do our players so it’s something we are looking forward to.

” Summerville dropped to 1-3 in region play..
