The NDP’s Kaitlyn Stadnyk is looking to take the Regina–Wascana seat in the April 28 federal election. She previously ran as the Saskatchewan NDP candidate in a 2023 provincial byelection for Lumsden–Morse, finishing third in the west-of-Regina district (with 22 per cent of votes) behind the Saskatchewan Party and the Saskatchewan United Party. Since transitioning to federal politics, Stadnyk says voters have told her they’re “feeling the pressure” from the rising cost of living while housing is “a major issue and it’s one that can’t be ignored.
” “We will implement national rent control to protect renters and ensure affordable housing,” Stadnyk wrote in an email to the Regina Leader-Post about how to address those concerns, if elected. “That means banning unfair practices like renovictions and demovictions and tying federal housing dollars to provinces and cities that take action.” Stadnyk noted the NDP has also promised to: introduce a grocery price cap, strengthen employment insurance (EI), and tackle “inequality” in the tax system so the “ultra-rich and powerful pay their fair share.
” Another concern she’s heard from voters in the southeast Regina riding is a “lack of access to family doctors and timely health care.” The NDP plans to increase health-transfer money for provinces, fund 1,000 additional residency positions each year for internationally-trained doctors, and introduce universal pharmacare. “Canadians should not have to choose between paying rent or putting food on the table,” Stadnyk wrote.
“I’m committed to ensuring every Canadian can thrive, not just survive.” Stadnyk grew up on her family’s farm near Lumsden and earned a bachelor of human justice degree at the University of Regina. She lives in Regina and works in social services.
Stadnyk is running against incumbent Michael Kram (Conservative Party), Jeffrey Walters (Liberal Party), Kimberly Epp (Green Party) and Peter Bruce (People’s Party of Canada).
