Former Sony president Shuhei Yoshida believes that Nintendo is “losing its identity” after the Switch 2 turned out to be an upgraded version of its predecessor. After years of rumors and speculation, the Nintendo Switch 2 was finally revealed in January 2025, followed by a more in-depth direct in April. This gave fans their first proper look at the new console, as well as launch games like Mario Kart World .

While many fans were excited about the prospect of a new generation of Nintendo games, others were more critical, calling out the battery life and some of the missing features . Now, ex-PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has given his thoughts on the Switch 2 reveal, and he wasn’t exactly impressed. Shuhei Yoshida wasn’t impressed with Nintendo Switch 2 reveal Speaking on the Easy Allies Podcast , Yoshida accused Nintendo of “losing its identity” of making consoles that experiment and try new things, such as the Wii or the original Switch .

“For me, Nintendo is always about creating a new experience, like designing hardware and games together to create something amazing – a new experience,” he explained. “But Switch 2, as we all anticipated, is a better Switch, right? It’s the larger screen, it’s got a more powerful processor, it’s 4K, 120 frames-per-second. They even had the hardware person starting the stream, like other platforms do.

“Because it’s a better Switch, the core premise of the whole Switch 2 is ‘we made things better.’ And that’s something other companies have been doing all the time,” he continued. He also went on to mention the other big news coming out of the first Switch 2 Direct, which is that more third-party games will be coming to the platform, like Elden Ring.

However, he felt this was only exciting “if your gaming was only on Nintendo hardware,” when many fans have multiple consoles.
