Current Mayor Catherine Kiewit formally honored his memory in a Mayoral Proclamation (online at columbiagorgenews.com ). Long served as Bingen’s mayor from 1982-1997.

According to Kiewit, he “played a pivotal role in shaping the growth and progress of Bingen. The proclamation further noted that he “exemplified the ideals of public service through fostering initiatives that strengthened the city’s infrastructure, supported local businesses, and enhanced the quality of life for its residents.” In other news, Bingen is celebrating the award of a $50,000 tourism grant.

The funds are from “a federal grant from the Economic Development Administration, awarded to State of Washington Tourism by the Washington State Department of Commerce for tourism industry pandemic recovery, and are intended for rural and underserved communities.” Kiewit thanked local entrepreneur James Szubski for alerting her to the grant opportunity. The funds will be used to pay for covered bus shelters in the community.
