Former LSU women's basketball forward Sa'Myah Smith committed to Virginia on Sunday. She entered the transfer portal a day after the Tigers' Elite Eight loss to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. Smith became a fixture in head coach Kim Mulkey's starting lineup down the stretch of the 2024-24 season.
She played alongside All-American Aneesah Morrow, averaging 6.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in her third year donning the purple and gold.
A freshman on the national championship team, Smith came to life, especially during the playoffs. She scored in double-figures in three of LSU's four March Madness games, including two 20+ point performances. Smith made 79 appearances and 36 starts through her three years in Baton Rouge.
She played a large defensive role as well, averaging 1.3 blocks throughout her career.Smith's departure came as a surprise following the postseason success and the expectation to fill Morrow's shoes as the latter departed for the WNBA.
She joins a Virginia program that went 17-15 in its first year under Amaka Agugua-Hamilton. Psalm 27:3🙏🏽5️⃣#woohoonation🧡💙"Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow". pic.
