Former Lafayette High star’s grand slam sparks Charlotte past Tides

Andre Lipcius, who grew up in Williamsburg, launched a grand slam Friday night to guide the Charlotte Knights to a 7-6 home victory over the Norfolk Tides before 8,109 at Truist Park.Charlotte (5-2) evened the six-game series at two victories apiece against the Tides (3-4). Tides reliever Cody Poteet (0-1) gave up those four runs and took the loss.

The Tides responded in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Coby Mayo. They scored two more in the eighth, thanks to an RBI double by Carlson and a Daz Cameron RBI single. Carlson was 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles, three walks and three runs.

Edgar Quero was 3 for 5 with a run for Charlotte. Former Virginia Cavaliers standout Kyle Teel, the reigning International League Player of the Week, had a hit and a run for the Knights. Tim Elko, the son of Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko, added two hits, an RBI and a run.

Charlotte’s Steven Wilson earned a save for Jared Shuster (3-0) by pitching the ninth, leveling the series before Saturday night’s clash of right-handers Brandon Young for the Tides and Jairo Iriarte for the Knights..
