A St. John’s Christian product now holds the record for the longest reception in a South Atlantic Conference school’s football history. Former Cavaliers standout Corey Moraux was on the receiving end of a scintillating 90-yard touchdown catch during the fourth quarter of Tusculum’s 30-28 victory over visiting Anderson Saturday Oct.
26, in a conference game at the Greeneville, Tenn., school. With under 13 minutes left, Moraux snagged a pass from Pioneers quarterback Matthew Palazzo over the middle at the 18-yard line, shed a tackler at the 20-yard line and was never touched by a defender the rest of the way thanks to some good downfield blocking by teammates in Anderson territory.
“I gave Corey a big hug after that one,” first-year Tusculum coach Billy Taylor said. “I’m happy for him. He had dropped a couple balls earlier in the game.
I was on the headset with the offense and I heard (offensive coordinator) Coach (Wade) Lang just keep saying ‘don’t get caught, don’t get caught.' Sure enough he didn’t. He had his burners on and beat everybody to the end zone.
” Moraux, a senior, was named the school’s male athlete of the week Oct. 28 for his performance, finishing with 101 yards receiving as the Pioneers broke through for their first win of the season. The 2021 SJCA graduate lettered in football and basketball for the Cavaliers and was an all-state pick on the gridiron.
Moraux redshirted at Tusculum the fall of 2021 and saw action in eight games in 2022. In 2023, he appeared in nine games and hauled in 10 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown. This season, Moraux has 10 receptions for 153 yards.
