With coffee such a crucial part of many people's morning routines and coffee shops dominating high streets up and down the country, one former barista has revealed that customers' impatience can lead to one of the most frustrating questions being uttered at the counter. Ashley Bautista, who used to work at a number of popular coffee stores in the United Kingdom while studying at university , has opened up on the most annoying question that customers often ask baristas while their coffee is being prepared. Ashley wrote in The Mirror : "Of course, there’s the one question that every barista has heard many times during a shift and often merely seconds after taking an order: 'Is my order ready yet?' "The constant nagging and demanding nature of customers made me question whether they sympathised with workers during busier times.
Couldn't they see I was making orders as quickly as I could? "The question by itself is not a big deal, but when you put yourself into a barista’s shoes, it can become frustrating, especially when they’ve got several orders to make. Most of the time, baristas are juggling multiple orders at once, so constantly being interrupted can slow down the process and make them feel overwhelmed." An Irish study conducted by Alpro late last year found that 99 per cent of Irish people drink at least one cup of joe every week, with nearly half preferring to buy a coffee from a cafe rather than making it at home.
Cappuccinos proved to be the most popular coffee order at 43 per cent, followed by latte (34 per cent) and americano at 20 per cent. With coffee's popularity showing no signs of stopping, Ashley has encouraged customers to be more patient when ordering in store. She added: "It's crucial as a customer to be as understanding as possible.
On average during peak times, an order can take up to five minutes to be completed, even longer when there's food included. "Some might think that working as a barista is an easy job, but there’s so much more that goes on behind the bar than most people realise."
