Home | Formation of GNU was not premeditated: Mantashe African National Congress (ANC) National Chairperson, Gwede Mantashe says the decision to form a Government of National Unity (GNU) was not a premeditated move. He further says the ANC was rather forced into the GNU because of the electoral outcomes. The party suffered a major setback at the May 29 polls when it lost its majority for the first time in 30 years.
Mantashe made the remarks on Sunday at the wreath-laying ceremony of anti-apartheid stalwart Oliver Tambo at the Wattville Cemetery in Ekurhuleni. “We are struggling in a terrain that is not of our own choosing. It’s a terrain that was imposed on us by the fact that we lost the majority.
“Nobody planned the GNU. GNU is a consequence of having lost a majority in the elections and our restoration will be to regain that majority and begin to govern on our own. That will be restoration,” the ANC National Chairperson explains.
