Forest dept sets up cages to capture leopard

Surat: The forest department has placed three cages around Bhatpore village on the outskirts of the city after a leopard was sighted in the past three days. So far, no killings by the leopard have been reported in the area. Bhatpore village is within the limits of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

Forest department teams found pugmarks of the leopard around Bhatpore village. Based on the information provided by the villagers, cages have been placed around the village. There are multiple industries around the village.



It also has agricultural land nearby, and the Tapi flows on one side of the village. "We have placed three cages. But there are no cases of killings by the leopard.

Our teams are keeping a close watch in the area," said a forest official. Bhatpore is adjacent to the heavy industrial area of Hazira and Ichhapore. There are multiple state and national highways that cross Bhatpore.

In the past, leopard sightings were reported in Hazira, Abhva, Khajod, Amroli, and Kosad areas, which are within the city limits. It had created panic among residents. However, no incidents of direct conflict with humans have been reported so far.
