Foreign office updates Austria travel advice as Europe flooding hits

Extreme flooding has already claimed the life of one fire fighter in a rescue operation in the country.

The Austrian province has declared a disaster , as leaders highlighted "an unprecedented extreme situation". One person has also tragically drowned in Poland, at the hands of the torrential rain as a result of the storm, which has also claimed the lives of five people in Romania. According to recent reports in the BBC , several also remain unaccounted for in the Czech Republic.



The UK foreign office advised there is further road closures and disruptions to public transport links as a result of the floods, in a fresh update published on Sunday (September 15). People have been encouraged to stay up to date with road traffic information in the area. "Due to floods in the East of Austria, road closures and disruptions to public transport may occur in affected areas.

Check road traffic information and public transport updates from Austrian railways and Vienna public transport before you travel," it stated. Storm Boris has already brought extreme amounts of rain across central and eastern Europe, with more downpours forecast until at least the end of Monday. Austria‘s Chancellor Karl Nehammer said the storm situation had "worsened" and was "very serious," in an online post to Twitter.

Elsewhere, the worst of the rainfall has swept across the Czech Republic, with some areas of the country blasted by around three months worth of precipitation over the course of only three days. People are currently being evacuated from homes, with four remaining missing as a result of a car which plunged into a river in north Moravia. One man is also believed to have been swept into a flooded stream in south Moravia.

In Krakow, Poland's second largest city, residents have been offered sandbags for flood protection. It is believed around 1600 people have so far been evacuated. A total of 17,000 people in the area are without power, with Starlink satellites links being set up to maintain phone signal and internet connections.
