GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) will restore supply within 24 hours for 40 per cent of consumers who will be affected by the April 25 scheduled disruption.PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan said within 48 hours, water supply should return for 88 per cent of affected consumers, including factories in industrial areas and the Penang International Airport.
He said within 60 hours, water supply should be fully restored for all consumers. Some 341,708 accounts will be affected by the scheduled water disruption, which may last up to 60 hours from April 25 to April 28.During the disruption, PBAPP will carry out 23 waterworks projects simultaneously, costing RM25 million.
The main priority of the scheduled water disruption is the final connection work for the new RM8.7 million Sungai Prai River-Crossing Pipeline section in Seberang Prai Tengah. "PBAPP apologises for all the inconvenience that will be caused by the scheduled water disruption.
"Affected consumers should plan ahead to store sufficient water for use over 24 hours, 48 hours or 60 hours, depending on the area they are residing or working."This scheduled water disruption is the only one planned for 2025."Its primary purpose is to facilitate 23 waterworks projects in 26 locations throughout the state.
"These projects are necessary to upgrade and improve water supply services for 465,000 accounts in the service areas of the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant, Penang's largest and most important," he said today.Pathmanathan said last year, PBAPP invested RM31 million to upgrade the maximum water treatment capacity of the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant to 1,342 million litres per day.He said PBAPP was investing an additional RM25 million to improve the efficiency of the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant's pumps.
"The completion of these projects will allow PBAPP to pump more water at higher pressures to 66 per cent of its customers in Penang."These projects will facilitate faster water supply recovery from future scheduled and unscheduled water supply disruptions in Penang."© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
