The Melbourne Demons icon turned top footy commentator has opened up about being hospitalised with a condition that left him so ill he couldn't even talk for a few days.

The AFL broadcaster and former champion player with the Melbourne Demons is recovering after a worrying week which saw him spend several days in hospital. Lyon was back doing his breakfast show on SEN with Tim Watson and spoke about his week from hell.

'I couldn't talk there for a few days,' Lyon explained. 'It's been a week, one of those weeks, that's for sure. I went to day hospital for three or four days.



Just go in and get your intravenous stuff and get out. 'You just lay in the surgery and get the drip put in and sit there and as soon as it's empty, get out: that was the negotiation to not go to hospital. ' Pneumonia type lung stuff.

Had a couple of health issues going on. I'm well read on them all ..

The good news came seven years after their relationship began in scandalous circumstances. The former Melbourne captain, 57, controversially went public with Nicky, who is the ex-wife of his close friend and former AFL Footy Show co-host Billy Brownless, in 2016.

Garry blindsided his best mate by starting a relationship with his wife of 18 years, just 12 months after they separated. The pair have moved on from that dark past with Nicky revealing that the engagement was a truly blissful moment. Lyon got engaged to Nicky Brownless (pictured together) in 2023 'We'd planned to go and we did (have so much to celebrate).

We're really happy,' she told the Herald Sun of their trip to New York after Gary proposed. After years of intense scrutiny, Gary got down on one knee and proposed to Nicky during a recent trip to the Mornington Peninsula and presented her with a giant diamond ring. Nicky posted a picture of the pair lovingly embracing each other on Instagram and captioned it, 'The best surprise'.
