On a slow night news wise, one of the biggest sporting stories was Rangers’ rare win over Celtic in the Old Firm derby at Ibrox – a first for manager Philippe Clement at the seventh time of asking. Ianis Hagi, Robin Propper and Danilo scored in a comfortable 3-0 victory, that reduced Celtic’s lead at the top of the league to a mere 11 points. In terms of the title chase the result means very little, but bragging rights are never to be sniffed at.
And the clash between two of footballs bitterest rivals always features highly in any list of the game’s biggest derbies, alongside clashes between Boca Juniors and River Plate, AC Milan and Inter, and those involving the big clubs in Manchester and Merseyside. There’s another big match on the horizon this weekend, although whether it is a derby or a rivalry depends on how pedantic you want to be about the definition of the former. Roughly 10 miles of East Lancashire countryside separates Blackburn from Burnley, and the intensity of loathing some members of the respective fan bases have for each other rivals anything found in Glasgow or Manchester.
There was a time when the clash was a little lopsided, like in the 35 years it took between April 14, 1979 and March 9, 2014 for Burnley to win away at Ewood Park..
