PONIPATE Tuberi of Police played an instrumental role in his side’s thrilling 20-19 victory over Army in the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl Competition 2024 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday. The 20-year-old Kadavu lad was named the man of the match following the win, in consideration of his dynamic prowess and line breaking runs in the game. Tuberi demonstrated his skill and agility by converting two penalties and scoring a try which boosted the Nasova men’s aim of retaining the Ratu Sukuna tanoa for a third consecutive year.
His first penalty had opened Police’s account in the first half, followed by a try and a successful penalty kick made in the early stages of the second half. Being a Ratu Sukuna Bowl debutant is a monumental achievement in itself, and Tuberi was in jubilant spirits as he recounted his inclusion into the winning side. “I never expected to be a part of the Police side.
I had always thought of being a part of the high performance unit (HPU) after my stint in the U20 team and then I came to be a part of this team,” Tuberi stated. Tuberi was a part of the Fiji team that represented the nation at the World Rugby U20 in July this year. Standing at six feet and three inches tall, the former Queen Victoria School student dedicated the win to his family, who he noted had appeared in numbers to support him as he made his debut for the men in blue.
