By Katelyn Umholtz Flour Bakery will soon take over the vacant Boston Common Concession Pavilion , according to a press release from Mayor Michelle Wu’s office Wednesday. The bakery from award-winning chef Joanne Chang already has several locations across Greater Boston, and the Boston Common spot would be its 10th bakery. Flour will replace Earl of Sandwich , which had been in the space for more than a decade and closed in the fall.

Boston Parks Department began its search for the next restaurant tenant shortly after the closure, looking for an eatery that would enhance “the visitor experience through quality refreshments and exceptional service.” Other park additions since last year have included the Emerson College UnCommon stage and a beer garden. “Flour Bakery will be a great fit for this treasured space in our country’s oldest public park, the Boston Common,” Wu said in a press release.

“As we continue investing in a vibrant downtown, we’re thrilled to see local businesses creating new opportunities at the forefront.” Chang, who won a James Beard Foundation Award in 2016 and also owns South End’s Myers + Chang , opened Boston’s first Flour Bakery in 2000, serving her famous sticky buns, pastries, and sandwiches to the South End . “We’ve proudly been part of the Boston community for almost 25 years and are eager to bring Flour Bakery to this historic area,” Chang said in the press release.

“We look forward to making Boston Common a sweeter place this spring with our beloved Flour pastries, salads, and sandwiches, as well as new treats exclusive to this location.” Officials said renovations will take place over the winter, and the new Flour Bakery could open in spring. Earl of Sandwich moved into Boston Common’s octagon-shaped structure, which for decades had been a vacant restroom, in 2012 .

According to reports, the restaurant faced financial losses and space challenges at its Boston Common location. Katelyn Umholtz Katelyn Umholtz covers food and restaurants for Boston.com.
