There was absolutely nothing easy about the championship win for the Florida Gators against the Houston Cougars in San Antonio on Monday night. But the Gators were champions after trailing by as many as 12 points against the Cougars, so the comeback victory was a shocking result in the national title game. Florida was previously a respectable 4-4 (.

500) when they trailed by 10 or more points this season, per CBB Analytics . They had 15 wins when down by at least 5 in 2024-25, which was tied for the second-best in men’s college basketball. The win put them tied for the most of this type (16) among all teams this season.

Even before the game, they had also recorded a tournament-high 3 wins when trailing by at least five points during March Madness. The fourth victory, though, allowed them to cut down the nets and win the Big Dance. But what made it more notable was the opponent.

That is because Houston, meanwhile, was 30-1 (.967) during games in which they led by at least 10 points. This was just their second loss when leading by at least 10 points at any point during the game.

For what it is worth: They previously had 4 losses in which they were leading by at least five points, but the fifth loss was an especially difficult pill to swallow. This allowed Florida to win its third national championship in program history, which is a remarkable achievement.
