Here’s a photo which we know that diehard Bolton Wanderers fans are going to love. It was taken in the spring of 1957 and gives an aerial view of the club’s Burnden Park ground. Burnden Park, Bolton, 1957 (Picture: Newsquest) You can see the large standing terrace backing on the railway line on the left - appropriately known as the Railway End.
The banked terracing would feature in the 1962 film, A Kind of Loving. Manchester Road runs from left to right at the bottom of the photo and you can see where terraced houses had been cleared which would become a large car park for the ground. One thing is missing from this picture - floodlights.
These would be installed during the summer of 1957 during the close season at a cost of £25,000. Having been home to the Wanderers since 1895, the final game played at Burnden Park was on April 25, 1997 when Bolton beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 with the club then moving to the newly-built Reebok Stadium. The Burnden park site lay unused for a number of years before being made into a retail development which included an Asda superstore which opened in 2005.
