The transition back to office will occur gradually over the coming months; some exceptions remain based on the specific nature of roles and employees will still be allowed a limited number of WFH days annually. Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart has officially ended its long-standing work-from-home (WFH) policy, requiring all employees to now work from office five days a week, Moneycontrol has reported. Introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Flipkart’s remote work flexibility mirrored the broader industry trend.
However, the company has been phasing out WFH over the past year. Initially, only senior-level staff — mainly vice presidents and above — were asked to return to office more frequently. Now, this mandate has been extended to all roles and departments.
“However, the new requirement now is for all employees, across functions and roles, to work from the office five days a week," a Flipkart employee told Moneycontrol . Although the policy is now in place, the transition back to office will occur gradually over the coming months. Some exceptions remain, based on the specific nature of roles, and employees will still be allowed a limited number of WFH days annually.
Confirming the shift, a Flipkart spokesperson, according to Moneycontrol , said, “At Flipkart, the vast majority of our employees and contractual/gig workforce, especially those in field roles, have always operated from their respective locations of work." The spokesperson further noted the benefits of in-person collaboration, “In our corporate headquarters, we have been pursuing a gradual return to the office (similar to pre-Covid levels) for the past year and have seen increased interactions, synergies and deeper collaboration across teams. By returning to office, we aim to foster a strong sense of community for new hires and existing employees; and a shared focus on our common goal.
" Flipkart Aligns With Industry Trends Flipkart’s move comes at a time when most e-commerce and quick commerce players have already resumed full-time office operations, especially amid rising competition in the space. Its closest rival, Amazon, mandated office presence five days a week a few months ago and is shifting its Bengaluru operations from the World Trade Centre to Devanahalli to accommodate all employees. Meesho had already returned to a five-day office routine over a year ago.
In the quick commerce segment, where Flipkart’s Flipkart Minutes competes with Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, most rivals have long adopted full-time in-office policies. Blinkit employees have been attending office regularly for nearly a year, while Zepto even expanded its office space to accommodate its growing workforce. Currently, Swiggy is the only major player maintaining a hybrid model, with most employees following a 3:2 in-office and WFH split, although some teams are required to work from the office daily.
The shift in policy comes as Flipkart prepares to ramp up operations in quick commerce and gears up for a potential public listing in the future..
