A council flat was left to fester with flies after a woman reportedly died there, a neighbour has claimed. A tenant who lives in the Kingston Close block of flats in Hangleton reported a foul smell coming from their neighbour's flat, which was filled with flies. The flies made their way into the communal hallway, with the smell spreading to other properties.

The 36-year-old said the neighbour, who was reported to be in her 80s, died in the flat and was found by police on December 19. They said Brighton and Hove City Council left the flat in an “awful” condition, with flies visible to the public eye from the window of the property. They said: “She was old and on her own. “It just seems really wrong. They have got a duty of care towards their tenants.

“It has been weeks and the council are not doing anything about it. It’s unsanitary." The woman added: “It’s disgraceful.

“They have actively treated me like a nuisance.” Flies in the hallway of the property (Image: Supplied) Since The Argus raised the issue with the council, a team was sent out to clean the flat. Councillor Gill Williams, cabinet member for housing and new homes, said: “This is an incredibly sensitive situation and as such we would not go into specific details, but our team has visited the home and is arranging for specialist cleaning to take place.

“We are also contacting residents in neighbouring properties to assess any impact on their homes and what support we can provide.” HM Coroner confirmed the woman was found dead at a property in Kingston Close on December 19..
