Education should be a journey of discovery—a process that cultivates critical thinking and a deep understanding of the world. Unfortunately, our current examination system relies too heavily on rote memorisation. Rather than inspiring curiosity and fostering problem-solving skills, students are compelled to regurgitate textbook answers without engaging with the material on a deeper level.
This narrow approach limits intellectual growth. Students are confined to a rigid syllabus that dictates what is “important” for exams, reducing learning to a test of memory rather than an exercise in understanding. Even in subjects where practical application is essential, assessments are designed to evaluate how accurately a student can recall information instead of how well they can apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Such a system stifles creativity and undermines the true purpose of education. It is imperative that educators, policymakers, and parents collaborate to transform our educational framework. We must shift the focus from memorisation to genuine comprehension and critical analysis—preparing our students not just to pass exams, but to thrive in a complex, ever-changing world.
I urge all stakeholders to reimagine our approach to education. Let’s create an environment where the emphasis is on understanding and innovation, empowering students to question, analyse, and apply their knowledge creatively. FAIQA KHAN, Karachi.
