Surat: Utran police arrested five people for allegedly abusing two women traffic police officers and hindering them in their work. The accused got angry after the policewomen took a photograph of a car driver violating the seatbelt rule. The accused formed an illegal assembly and abused the two women constables, even pushing one of them.
All five were arrested by Utran police. According to a complaint filed by woman constable Payal Dabhi, she is posted at Circle 12 of Region 4 of the Surat traffic branch. On March 30, she was stationed at Sudama Chowk in Mota Varachha to penalize traffic violators through the ‘Violation on Camera' programme.
Two other constables, Roshni Mukeshbhai and Falguni Rajeshbhai, were on duty with her. At about 10am, a white hatchback passed their point, and she stopped the car as the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Dabhi took a picture of the driver and advised him to wear the seatbelt.
A few minutes later, the driver returned with four men and started arguing with Dabhi. The man told Dabhi that the car belonged to his son and the driver was his nephew. He demanded that Dabhi delete the photo from her phone and threatened to make a video of the cops and circulate it.
When Roshni told the accused not to shout, they said the police had no right to take photos and threatened them, asking for the photo to be deleted. All the accused began abusing the police personnel on duty and obstructed their work. One accused pushed Dabhi while others kept abusing them.
Roshni soon called the emergency number, and more police personnel arrived. Utran police inspector D U Barad told TOI: "We arrested all five accused — Vijay Mistry, Nikesh Mistry, Deep Mistry, Sanjay Mistry and Preet Mistry. They have been charged with obstructing a govt servant from performing her duties, using obscene language and forming an illegal assembly, under BNS Sections 189 (2), 221, 296, and 61.
