Surat: Two women died of asphyxiation when a fire broke out in a spa located on the third floor of a four-storey commercial complex in the City Light area on Wednesday. The women believed to be 25 to 27 years old, were working in the Amrutaya Spa And Salon in the Shiv Pooja Complex. The reason for the sudden fire was not known immediately, but the blaze was brought under control by teams of the Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES).
At least five other people present in the spa managed to come out safely. "Initial investigations suggest that the women, who were spa employees, were unable to exit in time. The fire may have spread rapidly due to inflammable materials stored in the spa, causing them to suffer from smoke inhalation and burns," an SFES officer told TOI.
Fire brigade teams and the police were trying to identify the deceased women. "Due to severe burns, their faces are not clear. After verification, their identities will be clear," said a fire official.
Their bodies were sent for postmortem at the govt-run New Civil Hospital. A total of 10 firefighters and two water bowsers joined the firefighting with a team of 50 fire jawans. Fire teams used a turntable ladder to enter the premises and control the fire.
Firefighting teams from Majuragate, Vesu, Man Darwaja, Bhimrad, and Navsari Bazaar also joined the dousing operation. "Since there were partitions, it is possible that the victims inside a cabin may not have noticed the fire initially in another part of the spa and fainted inhaling smoke. They could not come out in time and suffered fatal injuries," said a fire official.
The spa is alongside a gymnasium on the third floor. The fire was first reported to SFES at 7:15 p.m.
by a passerby who noticed smoke coming from a window. The building, situated at a busy intersection, houses a variety of establishments, including a bank, an insurance company office, shops, and a banquet hall and hospital located on the upper floors. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, questioning those present at the spa.
A police officer stated, "The deceased are from northeastern states, and we are verifying their identities. Further actions based on reports from the Fire Department and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL)," said Vijay Gurjar, deputy commissioner of police (DCP)..
