While Fire Country is no stranger to pulling at the heartstrings, lately, the series has made great strides in organic depictions of real struggles. This episode, particularly, did great work grounding many of the characters and the story. The show is getting back to the root of why Season 1 struck such a chord with so many fans.

Fire Country has leaned less on the constant chaos in Edgewater and more on the devastation right at home. (Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)There is still a way to go, but the series is proving that it knows where its strengths lie.Long gone are the days of pushing the toxic and fruitless non-relationship that Bode and Gabriela shared.

Instead, we’re seeing the characters develop layers that benefit the plot and the show as a whole — namely, Edgewater’s hometown hero.Fire Country Season 3 Episode 12 Shows That One Character May Be Worse Off Than We Realizedby Joshua PlemingElsbeth Season 2 Episode 12 Is a Master Class in How NOT to Get Away with Murderby Joshua PlemingMatlock Season 1 Episode 12 Could Be the Beginning of the End to Matty’s Marriage by Joshua PlemingFire Country is Finally Letting Bode Understand the Importance of BalanceBode Leone has made monumental growth in just Fire Country Season 3 alone. While it was consistently hinted that his reckless heroism stemmed from guilt over Riley, “I’m the One Who Just Goes Away” showed that he is finally ready to push past the pain.

(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)Honestly, this episode should have been titled “It’s Time to Let Me Go, ” if for no other reason than it’s half the mouthful the show chose.Bode from Fire Country Season 1 would have never given Jake a chance to call the shots. He likely would have left Jake to remove the rocks while he ran down the mountain for help.

It seems like a solid plan, except for the second rock slide and the fact that it took both Jake and Bode to get Rafael out in time to see the night sky before he passed.Bode finally realizes that not everyone can be saved, and if he doesn’t start enjoying what’s around him, he could miss out on his own chance at happiness.Fire Country took everything that made him a linear character in the first two seasons and is now turning it into his new backstory.

After all, you can’t make a diamond without pressure. His growth is only made better by the healthy and stable bond he has built with Audrey James. (CBS/Screenshot)Could the Leone Family be Shrinking and Expanding at the Same Time?I don’t think anyone could have anticipated the impact Leven Rambin’s Audrey James would have on the series.

When she first showed up in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 2, she wasn’t exactly a bucket of sunshine. She also wasn’t a fan of Bode “jumping the line” in the Cal Fire training program. The Law & Order Phenomenon: When Does Ripping Cases From The Headlines Become Exploitation?by Jack OriFBI: International’s Newest Addition Has Potential — If They Don’t Waste It (Again)by Jasmine BluBlue Bloods Isn’t Returning, But Boston Blue Has Serious Potential (and Some Concerns)by Jack OriThat is why I have been singing Fire Country’s praises so much recently.

The hands behind the series are choosing slow burns that feel more natural.Personally, I love the “enemies to lovers” plot, even though Max Theriot’s (SEAL Team) Bode and Audrey were never that antagonistic towards each other. And now that Papa Leone has given his seal of approval, there’s no getting rid of her.

That said, Audrey’s sentiments that mirrored the title weren’t exactly unwarranted. (CBS/Screenshot)Characters on Fire Country tend to just go away once they no longer serve the story, namely, Freddy and Diego. However, neither of them shared a personality that so closely parallels Sharon’s.

They say men choose women who remind them of their mothers, regardless of how creepy that sounds.Anyway, I can’t imagine anyone is on the fence about Audrey after she was so sweet and friendly with Walter.Speaking of the head of the Leone line, I hate to say this, but Walter seems like he has RPD or Rapidly Progressive Dementia.

Usually, symptoms present themselves mildly over several years. However, he is showing signs of decline in cognitive function — specifically with his memory. If that is the case, Fire Country may say goodbye to Jeff Fahey’s (From Dusk Till Dawn) Walter.

So, get the Kleenex boxes now. (CBS/Screenshot)He may be an ornery son of a gun, but he still has a family who loves him and will miss him.As most Fire Country fans have come to realize, parents are a pivotal theme in the series, and just about every character has a personal arc on the topic.

She’s finally in a good place with her feet firmly planted on the ground.Best of all, it’s been keeping Manny going as he struggles to deal with backtracking on the path he set himself on years ago. (Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)Like Bode, Manny has shown great progress and growth.

Despite his instincts, he chose to follow protocol in Fire Country Season 3 Episode 11 at the Renaissance Festival.Hopefully, the writers will reward his efforts by not having him backslide into old self-destructive habits. While placing Manny (Kevin Alejandro) in the Cal Fire program kept Three Rock relevant to the main story, he’s not the only reason we’ve seen so many scenes with the inmates.

A lot of that has to do with their incredible new captain, Eve Edwards. Although, we can probably drop the “new’ at this point.Fire Country is Taking the Gloves Off and Giving Audiences Real Stories with SubstanceFor whatever reason, the writers take special care to develop Eve in a way that makes her universally relatable.

(CBS/Screenshot)For one, she’s hardworking but doesn’t let that get in the way of her personal life. When everyone else runs around in the middle of a catastrophe, Eve always keeps it together, even in the direst situations. However, her biggest strength is that she always seems to have a kind word to give, no matter the person or the situation.

Thankfully, I was completely wrong as CBS‘s Fire Country instead pivoted to a genuinely heartfelt moment that brought a tear to this TV Fanatic’s eye. (CBS/Screenshot)There are no words to describe how overwhelming and terrifying it can be to come out to a parent. While this episode portrayed it with the best possible results, not all kids are lucky.

In fact, many never recover from the rejection they experience from their parents, the people who are supposed to protect and prepare them for the real world.Seeing Cole not only ready to embrace his son but offer advice and encouragement was a tissue-worthy moment, if ever there was one.Fire Country is taking the gloves off and giving audiences real stories with substance that leave a little something for everyone.

The setups are still rather cheesy at times, but the payoff is well worth it in the end. (CBS/Screenshot)Also, does anyone else think Eve could shoulder her own spinoff series? I could see her getting relocated and a show about her finding her place in a new town. I’m just saying.
