Pune: A fire broke out in the microbiology laboratory of Bharati Hospital in Katraj around 3.45pm on Saturday. No one was injured.

Fire brigade officer Sunil Naiknaware said the fire started in the refrigerator of the laboratory on the fourth floor of the hospital, probably because of a short-circuit. The laboratory staff alerted the security personnel after thick black fumes began emanating from the laboratory. Naiknaware said the hospital evacuated 40 patients and its security staff used fire extinguishers in their bid to douse the fire.

Two fire tenders from Katraj and Gangadham fire sub-stations rushed to the spot after receiving alert about the incident and started the firefighting operation. He said firemen gained control over the fire and extinguished it within 15 minutes. "They sprayed water for cooling the premises for nearly an hour to prevent the fire from spreading further," Naiknaware added.

Dr Sanjay Lalwani, medical director at hospital, said in a statement, "A fire broke out in the laboratory on the fourth floor of our hospital due to a refrigerator compressor malfunction. The hospital's internal fire safety system was immediately activated, and the fire brigade was called in for support. All the patients on that floor were moved to safety.

Fortunately, there were no casualties. The situation is now completely under control.".
