Fionnán Sheahan: Unedifying silence of Fine Gael’s John McGahon is ill-befitting of respected legacy he inherited

The Green Party has benched its housing spokesman. Don’t expect to be hearing much from Francis Noel Duffy TD for the next fortnight. The Green guru on homelessness was all set to appear alongside his leader Roderic O’Gorman at a party event on Saturday morning. But he was dropped when the Irish Independent reported he had objected to 330 houses being built next door to him, with such pertinent points in the national interest as “the garden of a proposed house... overlooks our kitchen”.

overlooks our kitchen”. O’Gorman, who has been going around the country telling people there’s an immigration emergency requiring difficult decisions to be made on accommodation centres, droned on with some nonsense about Duffy’s objections being “legitimate” and local area plans. Apparently there’s a housing crisis too.

Just don’t tell the Greens. Middle-class objections to housing being located nearby are seemingly legitimate. Working-class concerns about accommodation centres are often tarred as racist – even those raising valid worries in a respectful manner.
