By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Oct. 23: The government has provided financial assistance to 238 families of individuals who lost their lives in the latest disasters such as floods, landslides, and inundation triggered by heavy rains from September 26 to 28. The relief funds were distributed at the rate of Rs.
200,000 per person to the families of those who died in the monsoon-havoc. So far, relief funds have been distributed to the families of the deceased in 23 affected districts, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday. Joint Secretary and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs Rishiram Tiwari said that economic assistance in the form of relief funds has been provided to the families of 238 deceased individuals so far.
According to the Ministry, among the families of 79 deceased in Kavrepalanchok district, the highest number of fatalities, relief funds have been distributed to 78 families. The paperwork for one deceased child is still in process, and the family will soon receive the relief funds, the Ministry said. Similarly, out of 46 deceased in Lalitpur, funds have been transferred to 45 families, while the transfer for one family has been halted as their eligibility is uncertain, the Ministry reported.
According to Spokesperson Tiwari, relief funds have been transferred to the families of 19 deceased in Kathmandu, four in Bhaktapur, two in Jhapa, seven in Panchthar, one each in Dhankuta and Udayapur, five in Solukhumbu, one in Ilam, one in Okhaldhunga, two in Mahottari, one in Saptari, three in Siraha, and four in Rautahat. Additionally, the Ministry has provided economic assistance in the form of relief funds to families of one in Siraha, seven in Makwanpur, 36 in Dhading, seven each in Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha, one in Ramechhap, three in Sindhuli, and two in Rupandehi. The relief distribution process is ongoing for the families of remaining 12 individuals who lost their lives in the disaster.
“We could not distribute relief funds only to the families of deceased whose family details are uncertain, paperwork is incomplete, eligibility is unclear, or those whose family members are abroad,” he said, adding that District Administration Offices are active in distributing relief funds to the families of the deceased. A team including the Chief District Officer has been distributing relief funds directly to the families after the disaster. Immediately after the disaster, Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak prioritised the distribution of relief funds to the families of the deceased, free treatment for the injured, resuming blocked roads, and collecting beneficiary details for assistance.
In the late monsoon disaster at the end of September, 177 individuals were injured, and 18 are still missing. During the disaster, the Nepali Army, along with security forces, was deployed in the affected areas for search and rescue operations, relief distribution, and treatment of the injured. Furthermore, the government has declared the affected municipalities in disaster-hit districts as crisis areas for three months.
It has also decided to provide relief funds ranging from Rs. 5 million to Rs. 10 million to the affected municipalities.
