The cause of death remains unclear, with the office continuing its investigation.

In a 2017 interview with podcaster Marc Maron, Baena revealed that his passion for cinema began at a young age, after being deeply influenced by Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and Federico Fellini's 8 1/2. Jeff Baena and Aubrey Plaza had been in a relationship for three years before she appeared in his 2014 directorial debut, the zombie comedy Life After Beth. Baena’s subsequent film, Joshy (2016), starred Thomas Middleditch as a man reconnecting with friends after the tragic suicide of his fiancée.
