Film greats honored in FDCP's third annual 'Parangal Ng Sining'

Five of the country's outstanding film personalities and two award-winning movies were honored in the third "Parangal Ng Sining" hosted by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) Saturday night at the Seda Vertis North in Quezon City.

The event recognized the trailblazers "who have contributed to the growth and global recognition of Philippine cinema."Four titans of the local showbiz industry were bestowed the Lifetime Achievement awards.

The first honoree was former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada, whose award was received by his son, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada. "My father was not just an actor and producer; he was a visionary.



His name is synonymous with Mowelfund and the Metro Manila Film Festival," the senator stated.The second awardee was actress, director, and head of the Cinemalaya Foundation Laurice Guillen, who said in her speech: "Being an artist comes with a serious social responsibility. There's a story to tell, a vital message to share, and its impact on the audience.

In making films, no matter the scale, one shapes the culture of the community around us. Fortunately, our work is collaborative. We exchange ideas and learn from one another.

"Actor John Lloyd Cruz introduced the third honoree, independent, critically acclaimed filmmaker Lav Diaz . In his acceptance remarks, spoken in the vernacular, Diaz pointed out that the work of cultural workers like him is just beginning. "For as long as there's violence, poverty and injustice, there's work to do," he stated.

In her speech, Charo thanked everyone she worked with in her 50 years in the industry.

"Filmmaking is the ultimate collaborative medium. No one can claim solo credit to any film. Everyone has to put his heart into making a good film," she said.

Meanwhile, versatile actress Judy Ann Santos was conferred the Annual Achievement Award for her "nuanced yet powerful performance in Espantaho, which earned her the Best Actress Award at the prestigious Fantasporto Film Festival." Judy Ann was not able to accept the award personally and so just aired a video message. She said the recognition just gave her "many good reasons and inspiration to love the movie industry even more.

"FDCP also bestowed the "Parangal ng Sining" Annual Achievement Award to Sunshine, a powerful psychological coming-of-age drama directed by Antoinette Jadaone and starring Maris Racal. Bravely tackling themes such as abortion, Sunshine won the Crystal Bear for Best Film in the Generation 14plus section at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival last February.The rotoscope-animated film "Iti Mapukpukaw" also received the Annual Achievement Award.

Directed by Carl Joseph Papa and featuring Carlo Aquino, Dolly de Leon, and Gio Gahol, the Filipino Ilocano film captivated critics with its raw portrayal of loss, depression, and self-discovery. It took home Best Animated Film at the 17th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, reinforcing the global reach of Philippine animation.The lovely Iza Calzado hosted the evening, which featured powerful musical performances by Nyoy Volante, Rachel Alejandro, Arman Ferrer, Nicole Asensio, Jeffrey Hidalgo, and Cookie Chua.
