FORWARD Jerry Matana is filled with pride as he leads the Fiji Airways men’s sevens team at the first leg of the HSBC sevens series, Dubai 7s. The 26-year-old policeman has been preparing diligently and feels confident in his team’s abilities. Matana is grateful to have the support and trust of his teammates as he takes on his new role as captain.
“It’s been tough as this is my first time being captain and to lead the boys and I’m really looking forward,” said Matana. “I would like to thank the boys for backing me up and trusting in me.” He acknowledges the challenges that come with leadership, but is determined to lead the team to victory.
Matana emphasises the importance of teamwork and hard work, both on and off the field, in order to achieve their goal of winning the tournament. Fiji will take on Spain at 6.06pm today in their first match.
They will then take on USA at 9.52pm before playing New Zealand at 3.16am tomorrow in their final pool match.
The men’s Cup quarter-finals will kick off at 6.48pm tomorrow, the semi-finals will start at 10.06pm.
The Cup final will be at 4.11am on Monday..
