The title of today›s discourse is a pointer to a possible altercation between the Speaker of the House of Representatives and me. Yes it is indicative, even if the encounter is put off indefinitely since the Speaker pulled back from what could have provoked it. The Speaker presiding over an issue I can›t remember now used the word «Xmas» to represent Christmas, a tag that was very demeaning of the celebrant and his sojourn here on earth, which is the very foundation and sustainer of our faith in the Almighty God.

Xmas is a coinage of those opposed to Christ and the eminent positioning He has gained in the consciousness of people on earth. Those who loathe Him and the faith that came from His teachings have not relented in doing everything to diminish his towering image and to paint as creation of some persons of lesser significance. Some countries have made efforts at banning the faith at some points in their national history; others have persecuted and even killed adherents in the most dastardly manner.

America was founded on Christian ethics. The founders prayed severally and after they got independence via a most painful route, came up with the coinage “In God We Trust”. The position was in recognition of what Christian principles did to rework and reorientate people in the most difficult era of nation building.

In spite of this, modern leaders, some of them bearing Christian names and working from behind, have made using the term «in Jesus name», to appear offensive. Christian pastors in that country would start official functions and end a prayer avoiding the usage of «in the name of Jesus Christ.» They just pray and end with Amen.

If you haven›t observed, you can start now to be very observant. The Christmas holiday is waning in most western countries. What they say going on is, «national holiday».

Many have stopped the teaching of Christian religious studies, holding morning assemblies and prayer sessions. Donald Trump has hinted his administration would bring those activities back into the American education system. Let me return to the near fight I would have had with the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Xmas was the invention of haters of Jesus, the point I have already made and explained a bit. Mathematicians told us that ‘X’ represents an unknown identity. Jesus was never amorphous.

Though his birth was controversial, it still happened. Several religious historical accounts have copious chapters on his physical existence, what he did and taught. Writing has been discovered and the Roman Empire very much in existence during the time of Jesus Christ on earth.

So using «X» to situate Christmas is not only a fallacy taken too far, it is a calculated insult designed to ridicule and downplay something, and in this case the very person by whom the whole Universe was created and brought into existence. It was nice seeing the very distinguished Speaker quickly correct himself and to pronounce the right name, which is Christmas. It is good that our country celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.

Truth is that the power is not in the celebration, rather it is in the principles that midwived the celebration. Bible scholars say there was a gap of about 400 years before Jesus was introduced into the earth. In those years, the earth was turned upside down by the very sinful nature of man.

Nothing of value could stand. Might was right, humans behaved the way they thought was right. In an atmosphere of bad behaviour and conflicts that are usually the outcome, the economy must nosedive to its lowest ebb.

Hunger got to a point men sold their children for money or food, others killed theirs in a turn-by-turn fashion just to survive. Rat race became the standard and acceptable philosophy. Life was brutish, nasty and very short.

The mystery of divine birth isn›t something one can teach in a small space such as we have but it was God›s way of «clean beginning» with a transformative message to effect positive change. Anybody who was born before the fifties who is still alive would attest to the message of Jesus and his activities were very revolutionary back then just as it is today and would be tomorrow. There are kingdoms in the world today where the voice of the king is power.

Now imagine the old times. Jesus came and operated in the environment, taking aides and delivering His message with so much gusto. He feared no one.

He was brand new, had a firm grasp of his vision and its components. Today the world is far better because He came to earth. is introduction.

Imagine the world without the moderating influence of Christianity and its very sound principles. Jesus was so effective they tried forcing him to be king but he refused. Power of focus.

Nigeria, Africa and some parts of the world, if not the whole, now can see that without the God Factor man would work to his own destruction. Disagreements, abuses, stereotyping, senseless killings, conflicts and war against nations are all products of man’s inordinate ambitions expressed in one form or another. Jesus’ teachings were very deep and they had reflected in our thinking, our space would be like heaven on earth.

What we have will be quite enough for everyone and for the positive transformation of the physical environment. Everyone wants to rule, none sees the bigger sense in being the servant. Ideally, everyone should be the servant.

The greatest achievement of anyone should be in being a blessing to the larger society. These aren’t the virtues we see on display in nearly all corners of the world. Yes, the developed world has taken a cue from the Bible and has put some reasonable rules and regulations in place, and are very serious about their implementation, but gaping holes still remain.

Their gradual jettisoning of godly prescriptions under the guise of freedom to do as one likes is beginning to take tolls. Jesus is a call for changed men who will rise and insist the right things be done. Jesus is synonymous with vision and focus, which are vital ingredients for quick development of any space.

Where they are lacking, confusion and no direction are inevitable. We can see that from our experiences. Where no vision exists the people die.

They perish. Jesus is symbolic of selflessness. Men and women who would live and operate sacrificially.

It is about people who would operate with broadmindedness and run with a philosophy that serves the good of all. Our country needs plenty infusion of those qualities if we are to pick ourselves out of the doldrums we walked into with our eyes wide open and our thinking faculties very intact. My fellow Nigerians, who bewitched us?.
