Interested in sewing, knitting, crochet, weaving, embroidery, beading and other fiber arts? Look no further than the Creative Studio in the Wando Mount Pleasant branch. We have workshops on how to use a sewing machine, how to knit, crochet and weave. Less common classes include Japanese braiding and friendship bracelets.

Once a year, we have an indigo dyeing workshop where patrons learn about the history of indigo production in the Lowcountry and dye a bandana. The twice monthly knitting club meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 2:30-4 p.m.

That club extends to crochet, needlework and other fiber arts, too. Unlike the workshops, this is a special interest group that meets and beginners are welcome, and we are always happy to answer fiber related questions, too. Due to the popularity of sewing machines, we offer an Intro to Sewing Machines class once a month.

Intro to Knitting and Crochet are offered alternating months. Patrons can also sign up for one-on-one training to learn how to use the sewing machine, embroidery machine and serger (a machine used in the fashion industry to finish garments). These classes and lessons are taught on our Janome sewing machines, but you can also make an appointment for help with your own sewing machine.

For all the classes, be sure to check our printed monthly adult calendar which is available at all the public service desks and our online calendar at https://ccplsc.libcal.com/calendar .

Besides our Makerspace lessons and workshops, there are many great library books for fiber arts. To gain greater insight into indigo dying and shibori (a type of elaborate tie-dyeing in Japan), check out Stitched Shibori: Technique, Innovation, Pattern, Design by Jane Callender. For all your knitting and crochet needs, seek out Knitting & Crocheting All-in-One for Dummies by Pam Allen.

For innovative ideas on mending old clothing, look at Creative Mending: Beautiful Darning, Patching and Stitching Techniques by Hikaru Noguchi. Another fun book that goes beyond basic knitting techniques is Knitting the National Parks: 63 Easy-to-Follow Designs for Beautiful Beanies Inspired by the US National Parks by Nancy Bates. An additional resource to consider is Craftsy, a digital resource available through Hoopla.

Craftsy presents a series of videos demonstrating different crafts such as Tunisian Crochet for Beginners , T-shirt Quilts: Start to Finish , Sewing Wallets: Step by Step and dozens of other fiber arts crafts. Lastly, this branch offers take and make craft bags, some of which feature fiber arts such as weaving, fabric garlands, bracelet making and other yarn crafts. No matter where you start your fiber arts journey at Wando, you will be discovering great surprises of creativity in every corner.
