The Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (FENC) Fiji in partnership with the Tovata Methodist Church in Makoi has opened a learning centre to enhance learning among children living in that community. Assistant Minister for Education Iliesa Vanawalu said the new learning centre would provide children the opportunity to be assisted by teachers with homework, revision and exam preparation. “Many of the families that FENC Fiji serves include single parents, and parents with disability majority of whom earn less than $100 a week,” Mr Vanawalu said.

“We strive to offer children with resources to combat the growing issues of substance abuse in our community and at the same time influence them be responsible citizens of Fiji. “Let us remember that we are here to empower our children and make a lasting impact in their lives and their future career,” he said. FENC head of operations Nirmala Nambiar said their vision is to look after the poor and vulnerable children in the Fijian community.

“FENC Fiji takes on the responsibility to help children, enhance their learning and make them successful in life; overall future leaders in Fiji,” Ms Nambiar said. “We look forward to working with the Ministry of Education.” Ms Nambiar added the project began a few years ago, but discontinued after COVID-19.

This programme was launched on September 19 and will close on October 31. Ms Nambiar said they have assisted over 30000 children since 2009 excluding the COVID period. “The centre will commence with children in Year Three to Year 13.

” Ms Nambiar has acknowledged their sponsors Bred Bank Fiji responsible for the refurbishment of the learning centre in November with an estimated cost over $30,000. “We managed to get our MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed with Tovata Methodist Church and we also got the heads up that Bred bank and Capital Insurance Fiji were willing to assist in the project.” Tovata Kindergarten manager and church representative Temalesi Baleilakeba said the learning centre would allow the children to receive quality learning.

Mr Baleilakeba said the learning centre was a great initiative for Tovata community. Feedback: ioane.asioli@fijisun.
