Farewell, Blue Screen of Death: Microsoft to introduce a new error message in Windows 11

Microsoft is giving Windows 11’s error screen a fresh new look, saying goodbye to the familiar Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The revamped version will feature a black background and a more simplified design, removing the frowning face for a cleaner, streamlined appearance.Black Screen of Death on Windows 11 test buildsImage: Microsoft“We’re previewing a new, more streamlined UI for unexpected restarts, which better aligns with Windows 11 design principles and supports our goal of getting users back into productivity as fast as possible,” Microsoft shared in a blog post.

“We’ve simplified your experience while preserving the technical information on the screen.”The redesigned BSOD will first roll out to Windows Insiders testing Windows 11, version 24H2 and higher, in the Beta, Dev, and Canary Channels.In these test builds, Microsoft notes that the error message will initially appear as a green screen, before transitioning to its final color, possibly black, when released to the public.



The original BSOD first appeared in Windows NT 3.1 back in 1993. Over the years, it evolved, with Microsoft introducing the frowning face in Windows 8 to make the message less ominous.
