The trailer for a new film starring Jack Black has received mixed reactions with some fans 'excited' that it could be a 'new contender for the worst movie ever made'. The comic actor known for previous roles in School of Rock and the Jumanji reboot is set to star in a part live-action adaptation of the video game Minecraft. Originally released in early access in 2009 under the name Cave Game, Minecraft has since become a global phenomenon.

Developed by Mojang studios, it is a sandbox game that allows players to explore freely and build almost anything they want out of basic blocks. Now, a film is set to be released next year with a new trailer getting the best look yet at the realised world although not everyone is convinced. Tenacious D frontman Black will star as Steve, the player character from the game since its full release in 2011.

He is joined by Aquaman's Jason Momoa, one of four misfits who finds himself struggling with ordinary problems until he is suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world while fighting off Piglins and Zombies and embark on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative.

..the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Fans responded in wildly different ways to the latest trailer, which gives the best look at the cast and Minecraft inspired world they will be thrown into. Some went so far as to request that the film be prevented from release, comparing it to another major game adaptation that flopped at the box office as one person said: "This feels like what happened with Borderlands all over again." Another was conflicted due to their affection for the source material: "I have a love-hate relationship with this movie, I feel grossed out by the fuzzy creatures but excited because it’s Minecraft and I love Minecraft.

" One person added: "Jack black doing another cameo as Jack Black." While another responded to the trailer on social media suggested that maybe it will be a film classed so bad that it would be enjoyable as they said: "I’m so excited we may actually have a new contender for the worst movie ever made." Minecraft is in cinemas April 4, 2025.
