Ugly scenes have returned to domestic football as a Lilongwe-based fan, identified as Frank Malewezi, endured a humiliating experience when he was stripped ‘naked’ during a TNM Super League match on allegations he was behind juju rituals.The incident happened during the TNM Super League match between Dedza and Mzuzu City Hammers at Dedza Stadium on Sunday.A video went viral on social media of a fan, who was subjected to a strip-search, being escorted out of the VIP section by security personnel.But Times Sport could not establish the identities of the people behind the incident.During the fracas, home fans also bayed for the officiating personnel’s blood.This could put serious questions about the safety of stakeholders at football matches.In an interview Tuesday, Malewezi, who is a Kabaza operator, shared his ordeal.“I was head-butted three times before being forced to remove my shorts. They accused me of casting a spell over their team.“After searching me, they found nothing. Police later came to my rescue,” he said.Malewezi said he was feeling unwell following the injuries he sustained during the incident.But Dedza vice chairperson Mavuto Mugode while condemning the incident, claimed that the ‘victim’ provoked the situation.“It was a fight between two people. He [the victim] mocked a fan who sat close to him and, so, a fight erupted,” Mugode said.On her part, Dedza Police Station spokesperson Beatrice Jefita asked for ample time before he could comment on the matter.Meanwhile, the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has condemned the incident, saying it was concerned with the unsporting behaviour displayed at the stadium.“Sulom has reviewed the videos of the incidents and has initiated an appropriate disciplinary process in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.“We expect all participants to act in accordance with the highest standards of professionalism, ensuring safety and security at the league games,” the statement reads.Ugly scenes are not new at Dedza Stadium.In 2023, Moyale Barracks bus was damaged by some people suspected of being fans after a 1-1 stalemate in a league match.
