He pushed American Brandon Holt in the first set, getting up 5-2 and then taking the tiebreaker down to the wire. But Holt took that out and then cruised through the second set to win 7-6 6-1. Hewitt's the son of Australia's Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt, who won Wimbledon and the US Open during his playing days.

He's also been given a wildcard into the qualifying for the Australian Open next month. Cruz Hewitt missed out on the Canberra International main draw. Pictures by Anastasia Kachalkova The main draw for the Canberra International starts play on the Lyneham courts on Monday.

Heyman's golden chance If you wanted the ball to fall to anyone - it was Michelle Heyman. But the Matildas striker fluffed her shot, unable to put the ball into the back of an empty net after she beat Newcastle keeper Tiahna Robertson to the ball. It could've ended Canberra United's run of five games without a win, but they instead had to settle for a nil-all draw with the Jets at McKellar Park on Sunday.

United finished the game with 10 players on the field after substitute Lillian Skelly went off with a knee injury - Canberra had used all their substitutes. This was a battle between ninth and 10 th on the A-League Women's ladder - and the first half certainly looked like it. There wasn't a lot of action, with the limited chances United had coming through the work of Bethany Gordon.

She put Sofia Christopherson through for a shot on goal and then went close herself from the resulting corner. Jets midfielder Lauren Allan missed a golden opportunity to put the visitors ahead shortly after, unable to control the ball with an open goal begging. Caps let lead slip It was all looking so good.

The young Canberra Capitals had sprung out to a handy lead against the second-placed Perth Lynx. They led by five at the first break, got that out to seven at half-time and they were still in front until just before three-quarter-time. And they managed to get their noses back in front during the final term.

But they got completely overrun by Perth, who ended up 89-80 winners at the AIS Arena on Sunday. Laeticia Amihere (29 points) dominated for the visitors, while Anneli Maley (21) was also good. Charli Collier (20) was the Capitals' best.

Cavs swept in Sydney The Canberra Cavalry went to Sydney for a top-two battle against the Blue Sox, but they came away with nothing but broom marks to show for it. They were swept in all four games at Blacktown over the weekend, with the Blue Sox extending their lead at the top of the ABL ladder. The opening three games were all tight affairs, with the home side getting the better of them 4-1, 4-1 and 5-3.

But the Cavs were blown away in the fourth-and-final game 12-2. It's seen the Cavalry drop to third on the ABL ladder, falling a couple of wins behind the second-placed Adelaide Giants.
