A routine search led to a shocking discovery of weapons at a park in Lewisham.

A lookalike gun and a large knife were among the latest finds by police officers and volunteers, it was revealed today (April 7). The Lewisham Safer Neighbourhoods Team and members of the public carry out regular weapon sweeps in the area, hunting items stashed in the undergrowth. The black gun is pictured half out of a plastic bag among branches and blue forget-me-nots in the undisclosed location.

An officer holds up the large silver kitchen knife in another shot while a third item was a red Amtech claw hammer. Safer Neighbourhood Teams, or SNTs, are groups of Metropolitan Police officers who only operate in a specific ward. They work with local authorities, community leaders and residents to tackle local issues such as anti-social behaviour, graffiti, disorder and other quality-of-life issues.

The difference between these officers and other borough police officers is that the community, not the Metropolitan Police, set their priorities. SNT police officers also cannot be assigned to duty elsewhere in the borough or in London except under extraordinary circumstances..
