The Coalition is misleadingly claiming that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said he’s ready to do a deal with the Greens to form a minority government. The Liberal Party and Coalition politicians are sharing cropped videos of Albanese that make it appear as though he left the door open to a Greens-Labor coalition on Monday. But the full video of Albanese’s comments reveals he actually ruled out a Greens deal ahead of the May 3 election.
The Liberal Party Facebook page shared the cropped clip of Albanese speaking in Perth on Monday. “BREAKING: Albanese ready to do a deal with the Greens to stay in power,” the clip’s overlay text reads. The video features part of the PM’s response to a question about whether Labor would seek to form a minority government with the Greens.
“Just to be really clear again, if you ask me, do you rule out governing in coalition with the Greens, the answer to that is no, no. Is no,” the Facebook video shows Albanese saying. The clip was also shared by Coalition politicians James McGrath and Jason Wood .
“This might actually be the first time Mr Albanese has been transparent,” Senator McGrath said in the caption of his post, along with the hashtag #GreensLaborGovernment. The Liberal Party did not respond to AAP FactCheck by the time of publication. Some media outlets and commentators have described the specific section of the prime minister’s answer as the first gaffe of the 2025 campaign.
Regardless, his answer in the full video (time stamp 15 seconds), immediately before and after the cropped, 16-second clip, clearly shows that Albanese ruled out a deal with the Greens. “I make this point, as I’ve made it again because there was some reporting of something, in spite of the 385 times that I’ve said we will not govern in coalition with anyone including the Greens,” the PM said. “I rule out, I rule out, just to be really clear again: If you ask me, ‘do you rule out governing in coalition with the Greens’, the answer to that is no, no, is no — I don’t negotiate with the Greens.
..” A Labor spokesperson told AAP FactCheck: “The PM unequivocally ruled out a deal with the Greens today and every day for the last three years.
