Pat Riley, through his company Riles & Company, Inc. registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office the “THREE-PEAT” trademark for products such as clothing, jewelry, energy drinks, bumper stickers, collector plates and mugs, among others. Riley applied for the registration of the “THREE-PEAT” trademark in 1988 even before it became a popular term.
Riley created the term “THREE-PEAT” when the Lakers won two consecutive NBA championships in 1987 and 1988 and he anticipated a third consecutive trophy. Riley reportedly earned around $300,000 in royalties when the Lakers and the Bulls used “THREE-PEAT” in their respective third consecutive championships. Some people say that “THREE-PEAT” has become generic.
The Philippine Trademark Database does not show a registration for “THREE-PEAT.”.
