The striker is reportedly unavailable due to a leg injury he sustained during the Blues’ 2-1 home win over West Ham United on Monday. According to journalist Simon Johnson, the striker suffered minor damage to his abductor muscles after needing treatment during the game against West Ham.
Guiu, 19, a former Barcelona youngster, has not trained since then, despite efforts by manager Enzo Maresca to allay fears of a possible injury. Guiu came on in the 52nd minute of the game, his third appearance for the Blues in the Premier League. He replaced Nicolas Jackson with his side trailing 1-0 and was vital for Maresca’s side’s winning goal.
The Spain U21 star joined Chelsea from Barcelona last summer for just €6 million after making it clear he did not plan on extending his contract at Camp Nou. Guiu would have been the likely option to lead the line for the West Londoners against Brighton, particularly with Jackson injured. Maresca will hope that at least one of his strikers is available for the game against the Seagulls, who have already tasted defeat to the Blues this season.
Guiu has scored six goals in only 13 appearances for Chelsea this season, mostly playing in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
