Florence Mayor Julie Aubuchon reminded interested residents to apply for the upcoming Public Works Academy during this week’s city council meeting. The academy is an opportunity to learn skills and gain hands-on experience in the work that city staff perform daily throughout the city. The academy will run from June 9 to July 25.

Sign up “This is the second year of our Public Works Academy, and we are excited to build on the success of our inaugural program , ” said Aubuchon. “Last year, participants completed a beautiful pergola at Stringtown Park, and this year we will continue to create meaningful opportunities for youth who are career-focused and eager to develop marketable skills to excel in the workforce.



This program is about building both infrastructure and futures right here in our community.” Public Services Operations Superintendent Adam Duncan weighed in on plans for this year’s academy. “The program is designed to show our participants what it’s like to work in this industry and serve the public in a full-service city,” said Duncan.

“We have strategically planned a seven-week program that will allow them to see first-hand, while working alongside our team, many aspects of our work. This program is a great opportunity for the participants to learn and begin to develop the skills necessary to thrive in many different facets of Public Services.” The comprehensive program runs seven weeks (June 9 through July 25).

Schedule options include four or five days per week. Participants are compensated for their time at $17 per hour. The schedule runs from 7 a.

m. to 3:30 p.m.

each day. There are five-day (Monday-Friday) and four-day options (Monday-Thursday). Both schedules offer a week off (if necessary) for planned vacations.

The program also offers the opportunity to earn OSHA 10, CPR/AED and Academy certifications. Participants gain hands-on experience with many facets of public works and will work on a variety of projects. Areas of training and projects include: Participants will also have an opportunity to build their resumes and practice with mock interviews.

A valid driver’s license and the ability to perform manual labor and follow appropriate safety precautions are required to apply for the program. Again, deadline to apply is May 9. More information and application is on the city of Florence website .
