Harry Brook was confirmed as Jos Buttler's replacement ahead and will lead England in ODI and T20I cricket going into the 2026 T20 World Cup and 2027 Cricket World Cup. The 26-year-old, who is widely regarded among the best young batters in world cricket, will be ineligible to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) till 2028.

The England Cricket Board (ECB) ended months of speculation on Monday (April 7) and confirmed that Harry Brook will lead the England Cricket Team in both ODI and T20I cricket following Jos Buttler's decision to step down from the top job post after the 2025 Champions Trophy. The 26-year-old will take charge of the team this summer with a home series against West Indies, which will take place just before the Test series against India. England will play three ODIs and as many T20Is against the Shai Hope-led side from May 29 to June 10.

While Brook is set to become among cricket's biggest names, he is not just not playing the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season but cannot play in the world's richest cricket league till 2028. Why Harry Brook Is Serving An IPL Ban Till 2028? On 9th March, Harry Brook announced that he would not play the 2025 IPL as he needed a break ahead of the home summer. The star England batter was signed by the Delhi Capitals (DC) for a whopping Rs.

6.25 crore at the 2025 IPL Mega Auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, last year. As per a new rule was introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the 2025 season following frequent occurances of overseas players pulling out of the tournament without any injury.

The Indian cricket body decided that any player who pulls out without a medical issue will have to serve a two-year ban. "Any [overseas] player who registers for [an] auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons. The only exception, the governing council said, will be for "an injury/medical condition, which will have to be confirmed by the [player's] home board," said BCCI in a statement before the auction.

Brokk will not be able to play in the 2026 and 2027 seasons even if DC decide to retain him or enter the mini auction if the franchise releases him.
